Hours after it was leaked across the internet, Activision has released the official trailer for the next installment of blockbuster first-person shooter, Call of Duty—days ahead of the planned May 4th reveal.
The new game, developed by Sledgehammer Games, is called Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. This departs from sub-franchises Black Ops, Ghosts, and Modern Warfare, transforming Activision’s behemoth into a quartet.
Advanced Warfare appears to be set sometime in the near high-tech future—ergo “advanced”—with some of the trappings of Black Ops 2 resurfacing—Call of Duty meets House of Cards perhaps, with Kevin Spacey playing a major role in the game’s single player campaign.
Advanced Warfare hits shelves on November 4th. The game has been in development for three years. Sledgehammer joins both Infinity Ward and Treyarch as annual developers of the series, which remains one of the best-selling video game franchises in history.
The new game has been described as “next-gen first” and competes against new first-person shooter games like Titanfall in 2014. “Next-gen first” implies a focus on the PS4 and Xbox One, replacing the PS3 and Xbox “360.
If anything, after the disappointing reception of last year’s Call of Duty: Ghosts (Infinity Ward)—both critically and financially—the pressure is greater than ever on Sledgehammer’s AAA debut. Call of Duty needs to make a big impression on the new platforms.
